Environmental Science students are involved in the monitoring of Oxbow Creek, a tributary of the Thunder Bay River near the Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary and ACES Academy.

These enthusiastic students are putting the efforts at testing the water quality of their school's creek, understanding that its health affects the quality of the larger Thunder Bay River watershed. They are collecting and identifying Macroinvertebrates as biotic indicators of quality, and also taking chemical tests of the creek for elements like dissolved oxygen, nitrates, ammonia, and pH.

ACES Academy students plan to get outside monthly to monitor this site throughout the school year - even in the winter! This way, they can create a display that will illustrate the seasonal changes of the creek to better learn about water resource trends.

Visit ACES Academy's Facebook Page to learn more about the school.
