The Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative could not be as successful as it is without the dedicated support from all of our partners, including schools, government agencies, non profits, and businesses. They are the people that make these projects happen! Click the link below to see a list of all the partners involved in NEMI GLSI.

Gaylord HS Foresty Class at Five Lakes Natural Area

The Otsego Conservation District and consultant forester, Lynnwood Stephens, joined Mr. Nate Dionne’s 11th and 12th grade class to learn about forest management at Gaylord Community School’s own Five Lakes Natural Area.
Sustainable Schools

Students in Mr. Nate Dionne’s class got a chance to learn from forester of over 30 years, Lynnwood Stephens, about the importance of proper forest management.  After a classroom presentation, students followed Mr. Stephens out into Gaylord Community School’s owned Five Lakes Natural Area where they took measured the density of a red pine stand to determine if it was time to thin out the stand to achieve maximum forest health.  After measuring the average diameter at breast height (DBH), taking a swing with the wedge prism, and making a few simple mathematical calculations, students found out that the forest was overgrown!
