This program is supported through a NOAA Marine Debris Prevention Grant and aims to prevent marine debris by reducing lunchroom waste through student-led analysis and outreach.
10 teachers will be selected to pilot this kit/curriculum for the 2021-2022 school year. Priority given to teachers working in the 9 county NEMIGLSI region.
Expectations:
-Attend 2 days of training over the summer.
-Commit to piloting the “Taking A Bite out of Lunchroom Waste” Kit.
-Complete a beach/watershed/schoolyard cleanup with your students.
-Conduct a lunchroom waste audit with your students.
-Identify at least one waste item (ie straws, ketchup packets, etc.) to research and identify an alternative that can reduce the amount of waste produced in your school's cafeteria.
-Create a communication product (video, presentation, poster, brochure, etc.) to share/present your findings with school officials, general public and/or other classes.
-Throughout these activities, use the lessons from the kit to teach your students about marine debris and trash.
