ALPENA, MI -- The Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (NEMIGLSI) announced today
that the nonprofit has been offered a $20,000 Great Stewards Challenge Grant from the Great Lakes
Fishery Trust. Per the terms of the grant, the Trust will award $20,000 to NEMIGLSI if at least $20,000 is
raised from new donors, doubling the impact of their contributions.

Whether it’s engaging youth in natural resource stewardship, providing professional learning
opportunities for teachers or building relationships among community partners and educators, everything
that the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative does is made possible by our supporters,
said Meag Schwartz, NEMIGLSI Network Coordinator. “Their support of our teachers and youth, especially
during this time, makes place-based education happen right here in our northeast Michigan communities.
We are very grateful to the Great Lakes Fishery Trust for this opportunity and we are confident that people
will step up to meet this challenge.” New donors will essentially double their donation thanks to the
Trust’s dollar-for-dollar match.

Spanning nine counties (Alcona, Alpena, Arenac, Cheboygan, Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and
Presque Isle), the NEMIGLSI is a network of more than 100 community and education partners with the
common mission of protecting the Great Lakes and environmental resources of northeast Michigan
through hands-on, place-based stewardship education in and with the community. Every year, thanks to
support from NEMIGLSI, 20% of northeast Michigan’s youth engage in natural resource stewardship
projects in the region. These projects are designed to improve both communities and the environment.
NEMIGLSI is one of seven regional hubs of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, a statewide effort that
provides leadership and resources for place-based stewardship education in K-12 schools and
communities.
